23/07/2017· The Structure of Classification In the field of Mineralogy, the organizational structure created by James Dwight Dana, aptly named as Danas System of Mineralogy is the widely accepted classification system for the study of minerals. Dana was the first person to classify minerals into an arrangement by composition and structure.
Geologists first classified minerals according to their primary chemical composition, such as iron or copper. In the mid 19th century, American geologist, mineralogist, and zoologist James Dwight Dana created a classification system that arranged minerals first by their chemistry and second by their atomic structure or symmetry of the atomic arrangement.
