The Calcite Mine, which dates to World War II days, is situated on the northeast slope of the Santa Rosa Mountains below Travelers Peak. It is a collection of crazily shaped sandstone configurations located a little over a mile and a half from County Road S 22 over a jeep trail that is easy to walk but difficult to drive.
This mine contains three shafts called the Elmwood, Cumberland, and Gordonsville. It has an entry slope called the Stonewall. They contain eleven different minerals including gangue species like calcite. It is a carbonate mineral containing the elements Ca, C and O.
Mining at this locale began in the 1840s and operated off and on until 1968. Calcite was one of the gangue minerals in the mine and many calcite crystals with copper crystal inclusions were recovered. This crystal has a modified rhombic habit. It is translucent and the copper inclusions are visible under bright light.
Bring buckets. For adults, the mine charges $30 for a five gallon bucket. For kids under 12, its $15. Bring newspapers. Calcite is soft crystal and easily scratched. Wrap your finds before they go in your bucket. Bring a cooler and plenty to drink. Wear sunscreen.
